When you're calculating the space that the bed will fit into, don't forget to measure from the skirting boards, not the walls.
Choose a bed with thick, wide slats, like all of ours - they'll support your weight better (and withstand your kids jumping all over the bed).
Check that the supplier can deliver and assemble your new bed. Building a bed from scratch can be problematic and will never be as sturdy as when built by professionals.
To test the sturdiness of a mattress, pick it up at one end - it should be heavy, meaning it is made from natural fibers or thick wadding. It definitely shouldn't fold in the middle.
If you're buying a bed for a little room, avoid dark wood - it's likely to make the room look even smaller.
