each spring albeit open coil traditional or super deluxe pocket system starts its life in the hands of a craftsman. the spring unit is placed on the work bench ready for the application of a thick sheet of felt. this chunky filling acts as the first comfort barrier. the felt is hand stapled to the spring – giving the right tension is the key. once both sides have been covered in the felt, the border material is added by hand. the craftsman will secure the border on ready to apply the various fillings that go into your new mattress to achieve its deep luxurious feel.
-
depending on the style of mattress you have ordered, the various layers of polyester will be added, again ensuring both sides of the mattress are equal. polyester is used because of its resilient nature but we also use 100% cotton and 100% british lambs wool within many styles of the mattresses we make.
-
after the fillings have been applied the top and bottom cover will be added. this cover is cut by hand to the required size, it will be placed over the fillings and pinned into place. once both sides are secured and the part finished mattress has been thoroughly checked it is moved to the next stage of its journey to you.
-
the mattress is "tapped”. this traditional method of sealing the covers to the border is a skill that requires many hours to perfect. the "tap edger" works his/her way round the mattress physically sewing the cover of the border. again an eye for detail is paramount in this job, making sure the sewing machine keeps its straight line and does not miss a stitch. both sides are fully sewn together ensuring all your comfy fillings are encased within its hand cut cover.

once we are happy the stitching is to our high standard the mattress is placed in the "tufting" machine ready for its final part of its time with us. the machine clamps the mattress and tilts the whole mattress unit 90 degrees. once the clamp has the correct angle the operator pushes the tufting needle through the mattress. the needle has the tuft attached so when the force of the needle goes through the mattress it is met on the other side by the wool felt washer. this ultimately keeps all the fillings nicely secured, but also gives your mattress its plump look and adds to its deep, unrivalled comfort.
-
after the tufting we lift the mattress off the machine and place the corner protectors on. it is then secured in a recycled plastic bag ready for it to start its journey to your home. the care and detail that goes into each one of our mattresses gives us satisfaction knowing that all our years of mattress making is still being enjoyed.
