warren evans mattress buying guide
it’s easy to forget just how vital a good night’s sleep is to our health and wellbeing. research shows that sleep deprivation can depress our performance levels – apparently we lose 1 iq point for every hour of sleep lost! that’s why choosing the right bed and crucially, the right mattress makes all the difference.
this quick and easy mattress buying guide gives you all the information you need to make a considered, informed choice, so you can sleep right every night and wake up feeling refreshed and raring to go.
put your money in the mattress more>
you wouldn’t buy a car with great bodywork but a duff engine. the same thing goes for beds and mattresses: the advantages of a solid, great looking frame are all but lost unless your mattress offers the right kind of comfort and support.
we advise our customers to buy the best mattress they can afford even if it means buying a slightly less expensive frame. of course you won’t spend as much money on your bed as you will a car but you’ll most likely spend more time in it and keep it for longer! a good quality, carefully selected mattress is an investment – whatever price point you choose from.
we offer orthopaedic coil sprung mattresses for those on a budget to our own range of ‘intelligent’ visco-elastic memory foam mattresses that react to heat sensitivity to stabilise your body temperature and know exactly where your body needs maximum support.
the benefits of a good mattress:
- enhances the duration and quality of your sleep
- can offset insomnia and sleep deprivation issues
- envelops and supports the body
- helps prevent back pain and joint aches
- ideal for those with arthritis, sciatica and restless leg syndrome
- saves you money. better sleep means better health: minimising the need for costly trips to osteopaths and chiropractors!
top tips more>
- lighter bodied people may need a softer mattress. the mattress should support the contours of your body closely, so you need to make enough impact and depression on the mattress to get the full benefit. this won’t happen if your mattress is too firm for your body weight.
- when you’re heavier then the firmer the better! the mattress needs to bear your body weight. if it’s too soft it will yield too far and you could end up ‘sleeping in a hole’. check out our firm or extra firm mattresses.
- partners of different weights and sizes often have trouble finding a mattress that suits, as their individual needs can be contradictory. we offer a full range of individually pocket sprung mattresses which contain three times as many springs as a coil sprung mattress. each spring is sewn into its own independent pocket and is able to react and adapt to your own body shape and weight or two different body shapes and weights. this means you both receive a mattress that caters for your seperate needs. warren evans’s memory foam range is also ideal as the mattresses are made from a heat sensitive material that morphs to accommodate our body shape and weight. the mattress literally ‘knows’ where to provide more support, allowing our muscles, joints and spine to relax. the more relaxed and comfortable we are the less tossing and turning throughout the night – and the less a restless partner disturbs our precious sleep.
- if you suffer from allergies you might want to choose one of our soil association certified organic mattresses. the use of natural materials repels dust mites and means they’re not sprayed with fire retardant chemicals that could irritate sensitive lungs or skin. or try the tempur: which is treated with an anti-bacterial agent so dust mites stay away.
- don’t be blinded by mattress myths! we could baffle you with mattress spring count figures, but don’t be fooled. quantity does not equal quality. a lot of companies cram in as many inferior springs as they can and contrary to popular belief this can actually be detrimental to the mattress quality. at warren evans all our mattresses are designed and manufactured to achieve the perfect equilibrium between spring and filler - it is the combination and how they are put together that makes the difference.
mattress and base working together to support you more>
a great bed has two essential ingredients: a strong, attractive frame and a supportive, comfortable mattress. like all great partnerships, you’ll find that neither works so well without the other.
at warren evans all our frames are handcrafted in the uk. we use traditional, long-lasting mortise and tenon joints and sustainably sourced wood.
our mattresses lie on fsc-certified wood slats. our slats are a solid 3/4 of an inch thick and 5 1/2 inches wide. these slats strengthen the frame (our frames don’t need a central support bar) and help air circulate so your mattress can breathe better.
improved breathability lets moisture dry out, so your mattress lasts longer. a drier environment also discourages dust mites, helping to alleviate allergies.

measuring up more>
- when you buy a new bed and mattress size does matter! bear in mind the proportion of the room and your needs. a couple will be more comfortable in a bigger bed, but leave some room around it so you can turn the mattress and incorporate bedside furniture and underbed storage if you want.
- all the bed sizes we give correspond to the size of the mattress – so allow for the frame being bigger when you measure up!
- all warren evans mattresses and frames are uk standard sizes.
- for any bed that is not in our space-saving range, the frames are larger than the mattress size by approximately 3.5 inches (9cm) in width and 4.5 inches (11.5cm) in length except the sunday, siesta, sunday birch and siesta birch beds, which is 6 inches (15cm) wider and longer.
- for the space saving range you only need to add an extra 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) to the overall length and nothing to the mattress width.
- if you already own a non-standard size bed frame and simply want to purchase a mattress, we can make one for you to a customised size.
- make sure you measure from the skirting board not the walls – sounds simple but it’s an easy mistake to make!
mattress care more>
different types of mattress require different types of care.
coil sprung and pocket sprung mattresses
- remember to turn these mattresses once a month
- alternate between turning them from end to end and side to side
- this little monthly task prevents compacting, encourages air circulation and maximises your mattress’s supportive orthopaedic properties
memory foam & tempur
- don’t turn these mattresses – the memory foam layer needs to stay on top so it can sense your body temperature, morph and adapt accordingly.
- rotate these mattresses from head to foot once a month.
